Playing the Hand You're DealtAll of us have challenges that can impede the pursuit of true happiness. Physical ailments along with financial hardships can change the course of our dreams and aspirations. As we age, the odds are that most of us will be dealt a hand that throws a wrench into our retirement plans. A good friend told me that you can make your plans but you can’t plan the results. There is truth in that statement. So how do we plan for our future when our future is unpredictable with so many curves in our path? First, making lemonade out of lemons is the best advice I’ve ever received. In my life, I love to golf. It provides peace and nature’s beauty all in one round of golf. My challenge is an unstable back. I tried fighting the messages I was receiving from my spine, and gave it one more try. As my attempts were met with pain and discomfort, my dream of golf into my golden years has been challenged. I can quit golf for life or do something about it. My choice is to do whatever the doctor orders and eventually pursue my golf dreams. Far too many of us choose to “play it safe” and remain in situations that could be altered, but due to the uncertainty of a new path we continue on a coarse that is not suited to true happiness. I see many folks remain in their homes when every sign has told them to change course and move into a new living situation more suited to their circumstances. Resistance to change is built into our nature. In our distant past it was a great survival tool. Moving into areas unknown could have resulted in disaster. We are now in an age where so much is possible. Senior housing communities are no longer the stereotypical nursing home where we go to end our lives. They are vibrant communities with freedom to pursue one’s retirement goals as well as providing a safe and healthy environment for our future years. I have met so many who after moving into a senior community said, “I wish I had done it sooner!” Yet these same people resisted the move right up to the moment the moving van came for there personal property. The lesson here is that even though you have been dealt a tough hand, options are there if you wish to better your situation. Only you can make that decision to make lemonade out of lemons!
