How many times do you use the phrases: I should, I’m going to when, I will when, why didn’t I, etc. These are words of procrastination. To procrastinate is to put off for a future date. There are many reasons why we make excuses for not doing what our deepest sense tells us we should do. This procrastination has many roots, and psychologists have written many books covering this subject. My real estate experience has led me to believe most putting off for the future is rooted in fear and anxiety. What are we fearful and anxious about when it comes to moving?
I had done a survey of over 700 seniors, asking the question, “what is your number one fear about moving to a new home?” The answer overwhelmingly was the fear of change! Fear of the unknown. How do I know I will like my new residence? Will I make new friends? Will my friends still visit me? Will my health hold up long enough to enjoy my new home? Will my money last? These questions can go on and on.
We know inwardly what is best for us, but many times we build a wall between our best intentions and our safety zone. I’ve met with so many folks who are living in situations that do not promote freedom and independence. Many times the current home may be a danger and emotionally isolating. Maintenance can become a burden along with driving at night, going up and down stairs, high taxes, and so many other debilitating obstacles. Even with these reasons to move to a better, healthier situation, people will endure this type of existence just to avoid the unknown. I fully understand this behavior as we all have a very strong instinct to survive. If we feel a threatening situation, we tend to move away from it.
The best way to move out of fear, and towards a healing and healthy living situation is to educate yourself. Go with a friend and visit communities that you know would be positive and healthy for you. There is a magazine called “Senior Resources” that has a complete description of many senior communities in the Milwaukee area. Meet with a Senior Financial Planner, and discuss your finances, housing needs, and goals for future freedom and independence. Go to seminars for seniors regarding moving and downsizing. There is so much information which is at your fingertips. You just need to change your vocabulary and stop procrastinating!
Bruce Nemovitz and his team would be happy to send you a free copy of “Senior Resources”, as well as share coming dates of “Moving Forward” seminars. Bruce has been a full time Realtor in the Milwaukee area for over 28 years, specializing in seniors and their housing needs.
